A gift of quality time with loved ones for Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day

This Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day, Thursday 12 October, the community is asked to open its hearts to patients with life-limiting illnesses by donating to transform the Redcliffe Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Every donation received by Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day will be doubled by Giving Day Impact Partners, for twice the impact.

Donate online at www.redcliffegivingday.com.au or call 1300 363 786.

Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day is the main event for Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital, a partnership between the RBWH Foundation and Redcliffe Hospital. All funds raised support innovative patient care projects, life-changing health research and other hospital initiatives.

The RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske said the main project this year would be adding a ‘touch of home’ to the Palliative Care Unit by renovating the lounge room and courtyard.

“Every year, about 600 patients are cared for in the Palliative Care Unit,” said Ms Garske.

“The unit provides a welcoming refuge when patients are unable to be cared for at home and visits by family and friends are really important.

“We would love to enhance that experience by providing a fresh new look in the common areas.”

More than $500,000 has been raised for Redcliffe Hospital over the past two years and funded a range of patient care initiatives and health research projects, including:

  • Renovation of common areas in the hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit, creating a warm and inviting environment for short and long-stay patients and their visitors
  • Two inaugural Research Fellows:
    • Prostate cancer – using fused images and 3D anatomical models of prostate cancer tumours to guide surgeons and educate the patients with urological cancer
    • Enhanced recovery after surgery – recruiting local GPs and community services to help hospital patients reduce smoking and alcohol consumption, and improve nutrition and iron deficiency (anaemia) ahead of planned surgeries.
  • Wishlist grants, such as:
    • A distraction trolley for the Paediatric Unit filled with fun activities, a Nintendo Switch and craft to distract young patients
    • Portable radios with headsets for elderly patients who wish to keep in touch with the outside world
    • Breast pumps to assist new mothers in need

The main activity hub on will be the Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day Radiothon, hosted by 99.7 Bridge FM. Located on Anzac Avenue next to the Redcliffe Museum, the radiothon provides the perfect lunchtime setting for a classic car show, a concert, prize wheel and community BBQ.

“It’s so heartening and gratifying to witness the level of community support and leadership of local business,” said Ms Garske.
